Its no secret that teenagers generally suffer from the worst skin complaints. Due to their fluctuating hormones their skin can endure some fairly dramatic changes, acne and oily patches being the most common skin conditions faced by teens. Theres a whole skin care market designed specifically for teenagers, and the choice of products and methods can be somewhat daunting! There are certain things which you can keep in mind when choosing products and carrying out your routine

The most important thing is to use natural and organic skin care products so there is no chance of harsh chemicals irritating skin that is already sensitive. Natural ingredients should not aggravate conditions like acne and eczema.

You should seek out natural skincare products with active, soothing ingredients. Lavender, aloe and chamomile are good for irritated, sensitive skin, and tee tree oil works well as an antiseptic for infected spots.

Entirely astringent products should be avoided. Although the skin appears greasy, depriving it completely of moisturiser can in fact make it worse. Light, non oil-based moisturisers are available. It is best to use skin care specifically designed for teenage skin as normal products generally cater for skin that is more durable and stable (unless they are specialist or pharmaceutical products).

In terms of your daily routine, it is important to stay clean and wash your face regularly as this will rid your skin of the bacteria which can cause infections and worsen acne. However it is also important not to over wash, or scrub the skin too often as this can cause the skin to become irritated or secrete more oil. A foaming cleanser rinsed of with clean water can provide a good level of cleaning whilst remaining delicate on the skin. If your skin is really oily and you find that you are washing it frequently then it can be a good idea to use blotting papers, or even tissues to remove excess oil.

It is important not to bring you skin into contact with bacteria, or even oil which clogs the pores, so keep your fingers away if you do have to touch your face then make sure you have washed your hands. It is a bad idea to pop spots, as this can cause the infection to spread. There are many natural products which specifically target spots and pimples, you can use these or just dab on a bit of tee tree oil to dry it up!

Always remove make up before you go to bed, the skin needs to breathe for a period and leaving the pores clogged up is a surefire way to get spots. There are natural and organic make ups ranges, and ones specifically designed for sensitive skin, it should only be lightly applicated.

Long or lank hair hanging around the faces can transfer even more oil to the skin and cause breakouts near the hair line, it can even cause acne on the back if it is always loose. Hair should be kept clean and if it is unavoidably oily then it should be tied back.

Obviously not all teens suffer from problem skin and each case will be different, however its a good idea to have the right skin care to make sure that if problems develop they will be under control, and generally just keep your skin in good condition! Ultimately, using a good quality skin care product with natural, organic ingredients means that you are giving your skin the best treatment possible!

Research has shown that the average woman who wears face creams and make-up on a daily basis absorbs 5lb of chemicals through her skin every year! It becomes especially hard to monitor what goes into our skin when it seems so tricky to get given a list of ingredients that mean the slightest thing to us! Reading the label on a typical jar of skincare cream means little to the vast majority of people, substances such as sorbitol, cetyl alcohol, dimethicone, propylene glycol and phenoxyethanol etc, dont entirely enlighten us on what we are exactly putting on our skin!

These unknown chemicals can potentially cause allergies, skin irritation, premature aging, nausea, depression, and have even been linked with cancer. Parabens are chemicals used in many cosmetic products and are easily absorbed through the skin, however many people are beginning to avoid using parabens as in resent studies parabens have been found in samples of breast tumors.

Whilst it is important to look good your average person will agree that vanity should not override good health. People should switch to products with a list of ingredients that they can actually understand! With a booming range of healthy, natural and organic products there is no excuse for being ignorant when it comes to skincare!

When using organic and natural products you can be assured of having smooth, glowing, fresh skin, in the healthiest way possible. The ingredients are all totally beneficial with no risk of nasty side effects in the future.

As they are generally taken from plants and fruits, the natural ingredients in cosmetics much like in healthy food - contain vitamins and nutrients which contain natural antioxidants, known to help prevent cancer and when using organic products you can be sure that none of the ingredients will damage you internally.

With certified organic products you can relax knowing that the ingredients were grown naturally as organic food is grown, they are not tested on animals and the packaging is generally environmentally friendly.

The above benefits are generally specific to products which have been certified to be totally organic. You can be sure that during the manufacture of the skincare product no artificial pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, additives or genetically modified materials were used at any point. You can also be assured that none of the above were used at any stage in the manufacture of the products. Certified organic products will always have been kept isolated from non-certified products, so there is no chance of contamination, the products and the production process being open for verification anytime.

Organic products are specifically good for sensitive skin, troublesome teenage skin or babys skin. They will not potentially cause a reaction like chemical products and will not irritate already problematic areas. It is good to have an understanding of many different natural ingredients, as you can then determine what products will do the right job for you! For example beeswax is a common ingredient, it works by helping to seal the skin and to keep it soft, tee tree oil is a good antiseptic for spots, chamomiles is soothing much like calendula which is known to relieve pain, reduces swelling and promote healing.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) have been the mainstay of arthritis treatment for more than 50 years Over this time multiple drugs have reached the market and have been used by millions of people

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) have been the mainstay of arthritis treatment for more than 50 years. Over this time multiple drugs have reached the market and have been used by millions of people. In most cases, the safety profile has been one that has been predictable. In a few unusual cases, safety has been problematic leading to the withdrawal from the market of at least three drugs- Oraflex, Vioxx, and Bextra.

NSAIDS provide both analgesic (pain-relieving) as well as anti-inflammatory effects in arthritis.

Their action is dependent upon their effect in blocking the cyclooxygenase pathway. Cyclooxygenase is an enzyme that is responsible for the production of inflammation producing enzymes called prostaglandins. There are at least two cyclooxygenase pathways. Pathway one- termed COX-1 is the pathway blocked by most NSAIDS. These include drugs such as ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxyn (Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), oxaprocin (Daypro), nabumetone (Relafen), etodolac (Lodine), ketoprofen (Orudis), and meloxicam (Mobic).

COX-2 is the other pathway blocked by drugs like Celebrex.

Because these drugs are prescribed so widely by many different types of physicians including family practitioners, internists, orthopedic surgeons, as well as by rheumatologists, the extent to which serious side-effect issues have been addressed is unknown. The American College of Rheumatology recently released their recommendations in a paper published in the August 15th issue of Arthritis Care & Research (Arthritis Care and Research. 2008; 59: 1058-1073).

The authors recognized the fact that these drugs are often prescribed for patients with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, as well as kidney dysfunction. What this means is that each patient needs to be evaluated as an individual. If the patient is on anti-cholesterol medicine or ACE inhibitors for hypertension, or aspirin for heart protection, these factors must be considered before prescribing NSAIDS.

Patients must be counseled in regards to potential toxicities and drug interactions. If the patient agrees that they want to take an NSAID, the drug needs to be monitored. Also, if the patient fails one NSAID, they may respond to another. Low doses are safer than high doses.

Monitoring of complete blood count as well as liver and kidney function should be done routinely.

If a patient is taking aspirin for heart protection, NSAIDS should be taken cautiously and with stomach protection if possible.

Unfortunately, there is a problem in that patients who need to be on heart-protective aspirin and who desperately need an NSAID for their arthritis are subject to a double whammy. The combination of low dose aspirin plus an NSAID increases the risk of gastrointestinal complications such as ulcer. At the same time NSAIDS themselves increase the risk for cardiovascular events such as stokes and heart attacks.

Also, it has been shown that the combination of ibuprofen plus aspirin actually reduces the cardiac protection of aspirin and the drug, naproxyn, if used intermittently also increases cardiovascular risk.

All NSAIDS increase the risk of kidney damage.

Many NSAIDS, particularly diclofenac (Voltaren) increase the risk of liver damage and need to be monitored closely and avoided in patients with pre-existing liver damage.

Patients on anticoagulant therapy should avoid drugs in the COX-1 class. Even COX-2 drugs may be problematic and should be evaluated carefully.

Whats a mother to do?

NSAIDS are potentially dangerous drugs that should be used by physicians who are experienced with this class of medications. Patients should realize the potential dangers and discuss them frankly with their physician.

Mourners at a funeral service will confront a variety of emotions as they say their final goodbyes, recall personal memories, and see others who loved and cherished the deceased. A well-organized memorial service can bring a satisfying sense of closure to those who attend. Additionally, the inclusion of friends and family members in the service often alleviates stress for the organizer. By getting involved in the funeral planning process, it can often help family members cope with their loss and feel a sense of comfort in having given back to the deceased. Contributions from family and friends may also allow immediate family members to relax just enough to more fully (and healthily) experience their grief.

When family and friends contribute to the memorial ceremony, the event becomes more thoughtful and comfortable. As individuals join together to express their love for the deceased, each in their own special way, the service becomes an individualized tribute to the lost. Such unique ceremonies remain in the minds and hearts of attendees as beautiful memories.

Approaching Family And Friends

The travel plans, special talents, and interests of family and friends should be considered when looking for ways to incorporate others into a funeral service. For instance, family flying in from out-of-town may not have enough time for certain tasks. Some people are more comfortable in front of people then others. Dont further upset a shy family member by asking them to give a eulogy or read a poem during the service unless it feels like a necessity. As you ask others if they would like to contribute to the funeral, let their interests and talents guide your final plans. The aspiring writer grandchild may not be interested in speaking, for instance, but she may interested in writing a eulogy poem to be read during the service or the sympathy poem that may be included in the memory cards. As you or a funeral director plan the service, continue to consider what tasks can be distributed to interested family and friends.

Incorporating Family Into the Ceremony

Funeral planning involves a number of large and small tasks that can be shared between caring family members and close friends. Here are just a few elements typically included in a funeral or memorial service that may be completed by others.

Music

Musical family or friends may enjoy playing an instrument or singing an appropriate song at the service. Music often plays a significant part in a memorial service, helping express the grief and love many are unable to verbalize themselves. If you have someone that may be interested in assisting with the music, you can ask them to choose a song or provide a couple of recommendations inspired by the deceased or their family.

Eulogy

Speaking at the funeral should be a task given to someone (or multiple people) that are comfortable speaking in front of others. Speakers should be balanced where possible providing a few different perspectives on the life of the deceased.

Poetry Reading

Poems are a powerful tool for expressing unique feelings. If you have an individual with a special talent for writing or poetry, ask them if they are able to provide a reading for the service. If time permits, you may wish to have a poem written by a family member included in the memory book or on a memory card. Poetry may also be something that can be read as part of the eulogy, whether written by a family member or just a favorite poem of the deceased.

Greeters

Family members that are especially social or possess a certain grace under duress quality may do well as a greeter for guests as they enter the church, home or funeral home. Greeters make sure mourners are comfortable and find places to sit. They also assist them with placing gifts, donations or flowers in the appropriate places.

Behind The Scenes Preparation

Cleaning up the house, tending the garden, and arranging for food at the home or after the memorial service are good low-cost, high-care tasks for those eager to show their sympathy through deeds. Preparation can also include submitting the obituary to the appropriate newspapers, taking phone calls at the home, and arranging donation services for the family. Some family members may also be asked to help write the appropriate acknowledgement cards to those that sent the family flowers, cards and other sympathies.

Having family and friends contribute to the funeral service and its planning helps make the service a memorable and meaningful one.

~Ben Anton, 2008

Fructooligosaccharides, which shall henceforth be referred to as FOS for obvious reasons, are sugars with chemical linkages known as osidic covalent bonds that resist enzymic hydrolysisis, and so are broken down by neither the salivary nor the digestive enzymes. In other words, they are indigestible.

However, before discussing the biochemistry further, lets have a look at what they can be used for. Your body depends upon certain bacteria for its health. These are essential to help break down and digest certain foods, and also to provide a resistance to disease and infection. FOS is what is known as a prebiotic, which used to feed these friendly bacteria. Just like any other living organism, bacteria require nourishment and while they get plenty of food from our own diet, especially from the fiber content, they find FOS particularly appetizing.

Because fructooligosaccharides cannot be digested, it passes unchanged into the colon, where these bacteria live. As they break down the FOS and live on it, they multiply, and create an environment in your lower intestine that is hostile to many harmful bacteria such as Clostridia and E. coli. However, it is not only these harmful bacteria that cause problems with your digestion since there many other agents that can interfere with the smooth functioning of your gastrointestinal tract.

People all over the world are continually suffering from both minor and very serious digestive problems, ranging from heartburn and upset stomachs to severe diarrhea, Crohns disease, irritable bowel syndrome and even bowel cancers. There is a multitude of reasons for that such as the effects of aging, poor diet and bacteria from contaminated food. Organic foodstuffs do not last long in many warm countries, and while spices can be used to hide the taste, they are not always successful in killing off the bacteria.

Your health depends on a healthy digestive system, and when that is wrong then you will feel ill. If your digestive system is running below par, then you will not feel good, and could suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including tiredness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, fevers and depression. The health of your intestinal tract in particular is often neglected, and most people need to do something to give it a boost and improve its, and their, overall health.

That is what FOS can do. And it can do more than just feed friendly bacteria: it can help you maintain regular bowel movements, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, maintain a healthy immune system, break down hormones and rebuild them again (it is useful for the relief of the symptoms of PMS) and to keep down the cholesterol and fatty acid levels in your blood. It is used to feed beneficial bacteria, not to replace them, and if you are on a probiotic supplement, you can take FOS along with it.

Fructooligosaccharides are also used as artificial sweeteners, and alternative names for them oligofructan and oligofructose. There are two classes of FOS, the first of which is produced commercially by the chemical or enzymic degradation of inulin, a polymer of D-fructose linkages terminated with D-glucose. This is produced commercially predominantly in Belgium and Holland, and it also occurs naturally in chicory and Jerusalem artichoke, and in lesser amounts in bananas, garlic, tomatoes and onions.

The second class of FOS is produced mainly in Japan. This is produced by a process known as the transfructosylation of a B-fructosidase from saccharose or aspergillus niger, a black mould found on onions and grapes. This is basically the same as the first class, although the chemical bonds are in different places.

While they resist breakdown by enzymes, they are fermented in the colon by anaerobic bacteria, bacteria that work in the absence of oxygen. Because they are fairly soluble, they can be added to dairy products such as yoghurt and used to feed the bacteria contained in the yoghurt. In fact many supplements containing acidophilus bacteria are fortified with FOS: you drink the bacteria along with its food.

Although FOS is only now assuming increasingly popularity in the West, it has been used as a dietary supplement in Japan for many years. Some of the specific health benefits that FOS coveys by promoting the health of essential bacteria, are:

Calcium and Magnesium Absorption

There have been several studies that have concluded that FOS and inulin improve the absorption of calcium in the intestine of both animals and humans. The fermentation of the FOS by bacteria reduces the pH of the gut, which increases the solubility of these minerals and hence extracts more of them from food. The increased solubility also helps them to be more easily absorbed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. FOS can therefore help to maintain bone density and prevent osteoporosis.

Strengthened Immune System

By taking a supplement of FOS, you can increase the density of friendly bacteria in your gut fivefold in a matter of weeks. This crowds out harmful bacteria, and so the level of toxins in your body is reduced. Your immune system is allowed to work properly to fight of infection and disease without having to work hard on keeping down the harmful bacteria in your gut.

Promotes Regularity

Apart from being a food for bacteria, since it is not digestible FOS is also a soluble fiber that draws water into your colon, and so promotes easy transport of feces by the peristaltic pumping action of the intestinal muscles. It also absorbs excess water in the chyme and feces and so helps to prevent diarrhea. Furthermore, improving the health of the friendly bacteria also improves your digestive health that also promotes regularity.

Increased Energy

The fermentation of FOS by bacteria produces gases and acids. These acids help the body to produce energy, and although not a massive energy boost, when allied to the improved digestion it is significant.

All of these benefits and more suggest that FOS is highly recommended in the event of sporadic and chronic gastrointestinal problems. It is a natural substance that does not have a direct influence on your bodys biochemistry, but promotes the health and reproduction of those bacteria that do have a significant influence on intestinal health. Add that to the added benefits discussed above, and FOS is one of these supplements that could almost be called essential.

For years, the Motion Picture Association of America has rated movies according to content so that parents would know which movies were suitable for younger viewers. In the beginning, there were just three ratings-G, PG, and R. Movie theaters were also much more careful about admitting children that were too young into a movie that was intended for more mature audiences.

Now there are additional ratings and the movie theaters are not that careful about who they allow in. As a parent trying to determine a suitable movie for your children to see, you may be confused as to what the ratings are and exactly what they all mean. Below is a description of each rating and how it is determined.

The G rating stands for General Audiences, although this does not signify that it is a childrens movie. It simply means that there is nothing offensive in the theme, language, or content that would be unsuitable for young children. The presence of violence in the movie is minimal, and there is no nudity, sex, or drug use depicted.

The PG rating stands for Parental Guidance Suggested. While there may be some violence and brief nudity in the movie, it is entirely up to the parents as to whether their children should view it or not. The Motion Picture Association does not feel that the content is intense enough to strongly caution parents. There is also no drug use depicted in a PG rated picture either.

One of the newer ratings is the PG-13 rating, which stands for Parents Strongly Cautioned. These pictures are not recommended to be viewed by children less than thirteen years of age as they often depict violence, nudity, sensuality, adult activities, and other elements that go beyond the PG rating but are not deemed to warrant an R rating. Drug use in a movie will automatically cause it to have at least a PG-13 rating.

An R rating on a movie stands for Restricted, which simply means that children under seventeen should not be admitted without a parent or adult guardian. These pictures include adult themes and activities, hard language, intense violence, nudity that is sexually orientated, drug abuse, and other adult situations. Parents are strongly discouraged from bringing young children to an R rated movie and should check it out carefully in order to determine if it is appropriate for older children.

Another one of the newer ratings is NC-17 which stands for No One 17 or Younger Will Be Admitted. The Motion Picture Association feels that movies with this rating are too mature for any children to view. This rating does not necessarily mean that the picture is pornographic. It simply means that the amount of violence, sex, drug abuse, and other adult situations are too mature for the younger audience.

Once you understand this ratings system, you should be able to choose movies that are suitable for your children, whether it be in a theater or in the comfort of your own home. For a more detailed description of the rating system, you can visit the Motion Picture Association of Americas Website to find the answers to any questions that you may have.
